One can never tire of the mystical affect created by
the vivifying colors and shapes that are achieved through the blending and
layering of oil paints. I have always been fascinated by the use of the visual
pathways of the human mind to stimulate intuition in the attempt of
understanding; and like all attempts throughout history by the mind to
comprehend the unknown my paintings take the form of the
mandala.
I'm a native of the Pacific Northwest and the
nature and adventure that it offers. Was raised in the family printing business
and so have always been involved with graphic arts. I attended Oregon State
University and The Institute for Religious Development in Warwick N.Y. under the
direction of the late Dr. Willem Nyland, teacher of the ideas and practices of
G.I. Gurdjieff. Studied with Illanka Karasz, cover designer for the New Yorker
Magazine. Also studied with Mel Katz, contemporary artist and professor at
Portland State University, and Lama Tinley Drupa, teacher and painter of Tibetan
Thangka's.
My paintings often contain
symbols and designs that play with a two dimensional surface in a way that
illustrates fundamental laws and principles of existence in space and time,
particularly the seven toned octave and the trinity. They all try to illustrate
the process of individuation and attempt to create a relationship between the
conscious and unconscious parts of oneself. Most of all, for myself and
hopefully for the viewer as well, they reveal an inner order of the psyche.
My paintings have been displayed in exhibits
at Portland State University and various group shows in Portland Oregon. Most
recent exhibits include participation in a group show at the Pacific Northwest
College of Art in Portland in 2001, and a feature show at the P:ear Gallery in
Portland this year. I have also been featured on "Art Focus", a local radio
show at KBOO in Portland.
